We arrived in Sorrento today, stopping off at Solfatara, aka THE ENTRANCE TO THE UNDERWORLD (Aeneid, Book 6). It’s called Aornos, ‘the place with no birds’, and you can smell why: the sulphuric gases coming from the volcanic ground utterly reek!
