Pompeii Trip 2017: Solfatara

We arrived in Sorrento today, stopping off at Solfatara, aka THE ENTRANCE TO THE UNDERWORLD (Aeneid, Book 6). It’s called Aornos, ‘the place with no birds’, and you can smell why: the sulphuric gases coming from the volcanic ground utterly reek! So, here’s Aeneas briefly regretting his decision to visit his father in the underworld…
