New for the OCR GCSE Classical Civilisation specification is Book 19 of the Odyssey (yeah yeah I know I haven’t finished Book 1 yet but I’m getting to it…eventually…)
Book 19 starts with Odysseus, now back on Ithaca and disguised by Athene as an old man down on his luck, starting to set up his grand plot to get rid of the suitors that plague his household and his ever-faithful wife, Penelope. Only his son, Telemachus, knows his true identity, and this helps him sort out his household: those who are faithful will survive, but those who are not, and who do not show Xenia to him as a poor down-and-out, are marked for death…
