This Spooky Season’s Guest Post is an Inktober-inspired set from artist Phuong’s stunning Tomb-Tober inks!
Phuong Nam Dang is a 27 year old freelance artist from Vietnam. She lives in Hanoi and works at Cloud Pillow Studio.
Phuong says: “This is actually a selection from my own version of the Inktober challenge series in 2020. The idea was my own so it’s called Tomb-Tober as I got the idea to do this series after playing Rise of the Tomb Raider. The game art is very beautiful, mysterious and delicate. The game is set in a fantasy setting with the culture of ancient Byzantine Empire, so in the series of illustrations it has a bit of a game influence, haha! When I embarked on the series, I wanted to give viewers the feeling that they were searching for the past, the history, the ruins that have been faded by time, even though the pieces are fragmented and obscured. In the dark, but with the protagonist holding the illuminating light, we lovers of cultural history always seek it with the guidance of the truth.”

về tranh vẽ, đây thực ra là tranh trong chuỗi thử thách Inktober vào năm 2020, ý tưởng được tôi đề ra nên nó có tên là Tomb-Tober, tôi nảy ra ý tưởng thực hiện loạt tranh này sau khi chơi Rise of the Tomb Raider, hình ảnh nghệ thuật trò chơi đó mang lại nó rất là đẹp, bí ẩn và tinh tế, trò chơi lấy bối cảnh giả tưởng với văn hóa của Đông La Mã cổ đại và mang màu sắc thiên chúa giáo, nên trong chuỗi tranh inktober này nó có chút nhiều ảnh hưởng của trò chơi đó haha. Lúc tôi bắt tay thực hiện loạt tranh, tôi muốn mang lại cảm giác cho người xem họ đang đi tìm lại quá khứ, những lịch sử, tàn tích đã bị phai tàn bởi thời gian, dù những mảnh ghép đang rời rạc và mịt mờ trong bóng tối nhưng với ánh đèn của nhân vật chính đang cầm, chúng ta những người yêu thích lịch sử văn hóa, luôn đi tìm chúng bằng sự dẫn dắt của sự thật.

Jenks says: I was scrolling through Twitter looking at alternatives to Inktober (I was setting up ClassicsTober with Dr Cora Beth Fraser) and stopped dead when I saw Phuong’s post from last year! Each of the images is brilliantly striking in its use of black and white for shadow and light. The explorer figure’s adventures borders on fantasy, with increasingly amazing finds illuminated by the single source of light she carries. I would have been happy to read an entire, wordless book full of these illustrations! I’ve picked my favourite four from her full collection, which you can see on her Instagram.
